Space Opera

for solo voices, mixed choir and orchestra (2014)

libretto: Georgi Gospodinov

The foreground theme of the two-act libretto is the first manned journey to the planet Mars and back to Earth. The characters in the story include two astronauts: a middle-aged married couple, a stowaway: an apparently ordinary fly, a flight manager who also hosts a reality TV show, and a chorus commenting on events from two perspectives: the human community remaining on Earth, and the souls of animals sent to space at different stages of the exploration of extraterrestrial, with special appearance of Laika, the first dog sent into orbit in history, and a Bedouin leading a caravan of animal souls through the Martian desert.
Spouses locked in a tiny capsule for many months must make a new life for themselves in a new, cosmic reality. Ordinary, earthly matters quickly come to the fore. But there are also otherworldly ...

The piece is sung in English.

The composition was created in 2014 on commission by the Stanisław Moniuszko Grand Theatre in Poznań
